UNITED STATES NATIONAL BANK |
Banking in early Omaha was very different from the corporate giants of today. Charters of early banks were very liberal, no public securities were necessary and no government supervision existed. Investors deposited monies in these banks based on the personal integrity of its officers.
The oldest banking institution in Nebraska is the United States National Bank. It was the successor of a land agency opened in 1855 by Joseph H. Millard and Company. The company changed its name on October 2, 1883, when it opened as the United States National Bank. The image in this photo is of the building at 1207 Farnam Street. This was the second building to house the USNB.
